Inside the Emergency Services Training Day: Preparing for the Unexpected

Imagine the sound of boots crunching over gravel, radios activating with a burst of static, and maps unfolding, all before the sun has risen. Imagine no more because on August 15, 2026, the Brunswick County Composite Squadron, cadets and senior members, conducted an Emergency Services Training Day.

The Brunswick County Composite Squadron, Emergency Services Officer Captain Todd Hamiter led the squadron training. The cadets and senior members traveled to William “Bill” Smith Park in Oak Island, North Carolina, 1.5 miles from the Southport Airport, where the exercise took place.

“This is an introduction to Emergency Services. It demonstrated the big-picture overview of how the Civil Air Patrol conducts search and rescue operations. During this event, the cadets had hands-on training with compass and map reading, radio communications, and proper ground team search techniques,” said Capt. Hamiter. This is the purpose of this emergency services training day.

The turnout was strong, with both experienced cadets and some going into emergency services for the first time. C/2d Lt. Suchecki said, “This event was an amazing opportunity for cadets to get hands-on training to get their certifications and giving them the chance to acquire needed skills such as radio communication, compass training, pace count, and much, much more.”

The search and rescue operations are not only to introduce the cadets to Emergency Services, but also to build the skills and knowledge they will need for the rest of their lives. Learning the skills and knowledge of teamwork and communication will help the cadets in their future employment and relationships. “The skills cadets begin learning during this training will be used in future activities, exercises, and potentially real-world missions supporting our communities.” said Capt. Angela Kreuser, Brunswick County Composite Squadron Commander. Whenever new Emergency Services activities pop up, these cadets will be ready to assist and take on the excitement of additional learning opportunities.
